Alberta Health Services and the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (FOMD), University of Alberta are recruiting an ophthalmologist who has expertise in vitreoretinal surgery. The Department’s vision is to lead patient-centered eye care through outstanding and integrated service, education and research. The successful candidate will have medical and surgical experience and expertise in the identification and treatment of retinal pathology including retinal detachment repair, macular surgery, diabetic retinopathy, intermediate and posterior uveitis, and hereditary retinopathies. The candidate will have experience and competency in the screening and treatment of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). The University of Alberta seeks a candidate with a proven track record of publication in peer reviewed journals. Research and clinical teaching experience is essential. The Department of Ophthalmology’s Eye Institute of Alberta (EIA) is a Center of Excellence for all levels of ophthalmic care. It serves a population of over 3 million people in the Edmonton region, the northern areas of Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan as well as the Northwest and Yukon Territories. The hub for the EIA is the Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH). The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences consists of over 40 staff ophthalmologists who work as physicians and surgeons, with teaching appointments within the FOMD at the University of Alberta. Current areas of research strength include clinical trials, ocular genetics, and tele-ophthalmology. Job Description Clinical Practice: Full time vitreoretinal clinical practice in a community-based setting, except one (1) day each month will be on-site at the RAH Eye Institute. Surgical Practice: The operating time is currently shared amongst six full-time retina surgeons. No new OR will be made available as part of this recruitment. A minimum of two (2) operating days per month will be provided at the RAH. Call Responsibilities: Retina related call duties in Edmonton are significant with retina specialists performing regular emergency surgeries in the evening and weekends. This includes coverage of ROP screenings. Teaching and Research: There will be teaching responsibilities involving medical students, residents and retina fellows. Participation in novel retina related research and acting as a mentor for various learners will also form an important opportunity for the successful candidate. Teaching and research will be enabled through an appointment as Clinical Faculty within the University of Alberta FOMD. Committee Work: It is expected that the successful candidate will assist in improving the lives of patients, learners and ophthalmologists in Edmonton by volunteering to participate on a variety of committees.
Applicants must be licensed in good standing, or eligible for licensure, with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). Candidate will have completed a residency in ophthalmology and a two (2)-year surgical and medical vitreoretinal fellowship. The candidate must be a diplomate of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (DRCPSC) in the area of Retina, or be eligible for and apply for this designation.
